Of Leaders Past: Andrew Jackson

There is plenty to be tossed around about the negative acts of Andrew Jackson's Presidential life and history but like all past leaders his life is complex and full of contradictions, good and bad. Despite those negatives here are a few quotes that leave you with the impression that he was at least a man of mind and integrity.

Quotes:

One man with courage makes a majority.

Unless you become more watchful in your states and check the spirit of monopoly and thirst for exclusive privileges you will in the end find that... the control over your dearest interests has passed into the hands of these corporations.
Mischief springs from the power which the moneyed interest derives from a paper currency which they are able to control, from the multitude of corporations with exclusive privileges... which are employed altogether for their benefit.
It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their own selfish purposes.

Any man worth his salt will stick up for what he believes right, but it takes a slightly better man to acknowledge instantly and without reservation that he is in error.
As long as our government is administered for the good of the people, and is regulated by their will; as long as it secures to us the rights of persons and of property, liberty of conscience and of the press, it will be worth defending.
Fear not, the people may be deluded for a moment, but cannot be corrupted.
I cannot consent that my mortal body shall be laid in a repository prepared for an Emperor or a King my republican feelings and principles forbid it the simplicity of our system of government forbids it.
I feel in the depths of my soul that it is the highest, most sacred, and most irreversible part of my obligation to preserve the union of these states, although it may cost me my life.
The brave man inattentive to his duty, is worth little more to his country than the coward who deserts in the hour of danger.
Americans are not a perfect people, but we are called to a perfect mission.

Electoral College

Jackson repeatedly called for the abolition of the Electoral College by constitutional amendment in his annual messages to Congress as President.[19][20] In his third annual message to Congress, he expressed the view "I have heretofore recommended amendments of the Federal Constitution giving the election of President and Vice-President to the people and limiting the service of the former to a single term. So important do I consider these changes in our fundamental law that I can not, in accordance with my sense of duty, omit to press them upon the consideration of a new Congress."[21] The institution remains to the present day.

Opposition to the National Bank

The Second Bank of the United States was authorized for a twenty year period during James Madison's tenure in 1816. As President, Jackson worked to rescind the bank's federal charter. In Jackson's veto message (written by George Bancroft), the bank needed to be abolished because:
  • It concentrated the nation's financial strength in a single institution.
  • It exposed the government to control by foreign interests.
  • It served mainly to make the rich richer.
  • It exercised too much control over members of Congress.
  • It favored northeastern states over southern and western states.
  • I have always been afraid of banks. -Andrew Jackson

Imaginary Futures: Inventions at "Patently Silly"

Method of Using a Water Pipe

patent#: US 7122000

I had heard of snorting coke off of a strippers tits, but taking a bong hit out of her vagina?

This "water pipe providing sexual stimulation" seems to be just too depraved to be true. In instances such as this, I find it best to let the patent do the talking:

"The lower end cooperates with the wall of the vagina to form a water reservoir holding water in the lower end and the vagina. A stem is received into the inlet port with an end opening submerged in the water reservoir. Suction applied at the exit port draws air through the stem to bubble through the water reservoir to generate stimulatory vibrations transmitted to the vagina. Optionally, a bowl holding combustible material communicates with the stem such that smoke bubbles through the water reservoir to simultaneously filter and cool the smoke and generate stimulatory vibrations."

I don't doubt that the experience is pleasurable, but pleasurable enough for a woman to allow bong water in her vagina? Perhaps the only thing not surprising about this patent is that it was invented in Vegas. Hopefully, it will stay there.

Penile Volumetric Measuring Device

patent#: US 7147609

Penis size: For too long (puns are inevitable when discussing the subject), it has escaped the rigorous analysis of modern science and has been left prone to self-serving exaggeration. Thankfully, one fearless inventor has arrived to clear the field of biased pseudoscience:

"Throughout history, there has been discussion and focus on the human male sex organ. Generally, having a large penis is seen as more masculine and manly than having a small penis. Well-endowed male pornography stars are looked at by many with admiration and envy due to the size of their penis."

"there is a remarkable lack of convenient and accurate methods for measuring the penis. Most men merely take a ruler and measure the size of their penis in inches. However, to adequately describe the size of a penis the length alone is not enough. Nor is it enough to know the diameter at an arbitrary point. The penis is not shaped like a true cylinder, but rather it has a more complicated shape. Therefore, a method for measuring the size of a penis needs to account for the unusual shape and size of the human penis."

In the short 22 centuries since Archimedes first shouted Eureka from his bathtub, inventor Jason Turner has applied the same techniques of fluid displacement to accurately measure the one-eyed trouser snake.

Of course, scientific breakthroughs can often be met with fierce resistance: Knowledge is power, but the truth, if small enough, can hurt.

How Immeasurably Small We Are: Diamonds Aren't Forever

Twinkling in the sky is a diamond star of 10 billion trillion trillion carats, astronomers have discovered.

The cosmic diamond is a chunk of crystallised carbon, 4,000 km across, some 50 light-years from the Earth in the constellation Centaurus.

It's the compressed heart of an old star that was once bright like our Sun but has since faded and shrunk.

Astronomers have decided to call the star "Lucy" after the Beatles song, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

Tennessee #1 At Environmental Fuck Ups! We Knew We Could Do It! .......... Largest Environmental Disaster in the United States.........

A coal ash spill in eastern Tennessee that experts were already calling the largest environmental disaster of its kind in the United States is more than three times as large as initially estimated, according to an updated survey by the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Sludge Graphic

http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2008/12/25/us/20081225_SLUDGE_GRAPHIC.html

More than a billion gallons of coal fly ash, a byproduct of burning coal, spilled Monday when the dike burst on a retention pond at the Kingston Fossil Plant. The spill covered 300 acres with sludge in Harriman, about 35 miles west of Knoxville. It dumped a mix of ash and water in the Emory River, causing residents of nearby Kingston to worry about their drinking water.

Three homes were destroyed and 42 property owners had damage of some kind, according to Roane County emergency management officials.

According to Treffert, something that almost all savants have in common is a prodigious memory of a special type:[1] a memory that he describes as "exceedingly deep but very, very narrow".[1]

Savant-like skills may be latent in everyone.[4] Allan Snyder attempted to simulate savant impairment in normal controls by "directing low-frequency magnetic pulses into the left fronto-temporal lobe" of the brain (believed to be a method of temporarily inactivating the region and allowing for more direct processing of the extremely rapid counting task). Differences were observed in four of 11 subjects.[4]

Southern Icons: Banker to the Poor-Muhammad Yunus

Muhammad Yunus is one of he most important people on the planet. Like the Green Environmental movement, Dr. Yunus has created a serious and effective movement to end poverty through economics and loans as opposed to AID money. His mission is to give small low interest loans to the poor so that they may create and profit from their own craft or business. The microcredit loans are given by The Grameen Bank and have proven to have a higher repayment rate than loans given to the wealthiest of individuals. This is what Capitalism and Economics can be about, growth and wealth do not necessitate that the poor get poorer. His philosophy is that the poor "want" to participate in society, they do not simply want hand outs.
I cannot recommend more highly, better yet beg more strongly that you learn about this man and the Grameen Bank if you are unfamiliar.

Muhammad Yunus received his Ph.D. in Economics from Vanderbilt University and won the Noble Peace Prize in 2006.

Let's Make Drums Together: Steel Drum

I've always been fascinated with the Steel Drum as an instrument, like any traditional Roots Music
it's made from the simplest of means and it is all about the music and musicianship. Now I'm not
sure if there has ever been a "Star" Milk Jug player, or a celebrity Washboard player but if their were
I'm sure they were damn fine musicians. The steel drum is the same except it is part of the culture to
build and modify your own instruments. It's history as an instrument is pretty fascinating too.

"The steel pan evolved out of earlier musical practices of Trinidad. Drumming was used as a form of communication among the enslaved Africans and was subsequently outlawed by the British colonial government in 1883.[1] African slaves also performed during Mardi Gras celebrations, joining the French that had brought the tradition to the island.[2] The two most important influences were the drumming traditions of both Africa and India. The instrument's invention was therefore a specific cultural response to the conditions present on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago.
The first instruments developed in the evolution of steelpan were Tamboo-Bamboos, tunable sticks made obamboo wood. These were hit onto the ground and with other sticks in order to produce sound.[3] Tamboo-Bamboo bands also included percussion of a (gin) bottle and spoon. By the mid-1930s bits of metal percussion was being used in the tamboo bamboo bands, the first probably being either the automobile brake hub "iron" or the biscuit drum "boom". The former replaced the gin bottle-and-spoon, and the latter the "bass" bamboo that was pounded on the ground. By the late 1930s there occasional all-steel bands were seen at Carnival and by 1940 it had become the preferred Carnival accompaniment of young underprivileged men. The 55-gallon oil drum was used to make lead steelpans from around 1947. The Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra (TASPO), formed to attend the Festival of Britain in 1951, was the first steelband whose instruments were all made from oil drums. Members of TASPO included Ellie Mannette and Winston "Spree" Simon."

Santa Circuitry: Neuvo Christmas

http://design-milk.com/deer-socket/

This might be a good idea in general,I mean look at it you can hang your keys right next to your charging Ipod. I was thinking about buying some until I thought about what happens when you need to plug in two large wall adapters or when someone walks by them with a dress on and the cloth from the dress gets caught on and antler and from just walking by someone gets shocked, a dress gets torn, and a light socket gets damaged.
Sounds like a flawless design.. You can get them here http://www.nendo.jp/

Can Animals Predict Disaster?
Eyewitness Accounts: Wit Aniwat

Wit Aniwat is a mahout at his family’s elephant-riding center near Phuket, Thailand. He describes the elephants’ behavior prior to the tsunami:

Wit Aniwat On December 26th, at about 5 or 6 o’clock in the morning, the elephant trainer brought two elephants back from the forest to the camp. Those two elephants cried, felt uneasy … something was unusual. I was sleeping in the house and I heard the elephants cry. I thought, “Why would the trainer hit the elephants so early in the morning?” I wasn’t able to sleep at all, and they cried for a long time.

At 8 a.m., I came to work at the camp and I asked the trainer, “Why did you hit the elephants?” The trainer said that he did not hit the elephants; they cried on their own. Why the elephants cried for a long time, he didn’t know. Then from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., we opened for business as usual.

From 10 a.m. to 10:05 a.m., those two elephants that had cried at dawn showed some unusual behavior, were irritated and anxious to run away. At the beginning, I didn’t pay any attention. Later on, they pulled and broke the chains and ran to the mountaintop. The trainer and I ran after the elephants and called them to come back.

What happened just five minutes before the tsunami?
The two chained elephants at the back here started to get irritated and felt uneasy; they wanted to run away, they tried to pull the chain. They pulled and broke the chains and ran away. These two [ran] away first, and there was one more here who followed those two to the mountaintop. But there was another one chained over here and it tried to run away also, but it could not. And those two elephants that broke the chain went up to the hill and the trainer and I ran after those two elephants and tried to call them to come back. The trainer didn’t know that the wave was coming. No matter what we did, the elephants would not return. … After a while there was a strong wind and sound from water, broken trees. I turned around and saw that water was coming, so I went back to the camp. I wanted to observe and see what was going on and why the elephants ran away, until the water was about to reach me. … I ran and followed the trainer to the mountain.

But at about 10 o’clock I had a group of five Japanese tourists arrive to go on an elephant ride. The elephants started walking from this point along the road and then up along the mountainside. The two elephants that carried the tourists heard the noise just like the other two at the campsite. The two elephants that brought the tourists up to the mountain seemed like they were in a hurry to bring the tourists to the mountaintop, to a higher place. At that moment it was hard for the trainer to control the elephants.

The tsunami came about 10 minutes after 10 o’clock. In 10 minutes, they could not walk far. It was a short distance. When the wave came, the elephants that carried Japanese tourists heard the noise and the trainer looked back to find out what was really happening. After seeing the water, the elephants just brought the tourists up to the mountaintop.

World's Famous Orations-Williams Jennings Bryan Editor

Horace Greeley - On Southern Reconstruction, 1872
It is certain that throughout the course of my life, as far as i have been connected with public affairs, i have struggled with such capacity as God has given me, for: first, impartial and universal liberty; secondly, for the unity and greatness of our common country; thirdly, and by no means last, when the former end was attained, for an early and hearty reconciliation and peace among our countrymen. For these great ends I have struggled, and I hope the issue is not doubtful.
Those adverse to me ask what pledges I have given to those lately hostile to the Union to secure their favor and support. I answer, no man or woman in all the South ever asked of me, directly or through another, any pledge than is given through all my acts and words. From the hour of Lee's surrender down to this moment, no Southern man has ever hinted to me an expectation, hope, or wish that the rebel debt, whether Confederate or State, should be assumed or paid by the Union, and no Southern man who could be elected to a legislature or made colonel of a militia regiment, has suggested the pension of the rebel soldiers, or any of them, even as a remote possibility.
All who nominated me were perfectly aware that I upheld and justified Federal legislation to repress Kuklux conspiracy and outrage, tho I have long ago insisted as strenuously as I do now that complete amnesty and general oblivion of the bloody and hateful past would do more for the suppression and utter extinction of such outrages than all the force bills and suspension of habeas corpus ever devised by man. Wrong and crime must be suppressed and punished, but far wiser and nobler is legislation, the policy, by which they are prevented.
From those who supprt me in the South I have heard but one one demand-justice, but one desire-reconciliation.
Horace Greeley - First Presidential Campaign speech 1872 given Portland Maine *Born 1811 died 1872; founded the New York Tribune in 1841, notable antislavery leader elected to congress in 1848, founder of the Liberal Republican Party, a reformer, and a politician.

........Southern Creators: Andrea Jacobson...Spirit if.........

There's theory and then there is amazing talent. I have known Andrea for nearly 7 years, that's my bias. Throughout those seven years she's never failed to amaze me as friend as former girlfriend and now still. She is what an artist, a painter should be. She learned her craft pushing her abilities first rather than spinning off half realized theories. She has consistently grown as an Artist and works through an idea before starting off in new directions. Every change in direction has shown her allowing more freedom, less need to overwork a canvas to the point that the paintings are nearly or purposely unfinished.

Southern Creators: Randy And Claudia - The Art of Leather Inlay/Overlay

"I have not seen better inlay and overlay work anywhere. This sets a standard for anyone interested in this kind of work. I personally am in awe." DW Frommer II--Member HCC

I really can't begin to explain how amazing these people are. I found them by chance, and they forever changed my life. I consider them more than friends, I consider them family.
Randy and Claudia take leather and turn it into Art, they take a craft tens of thousands years old, and and bend it to match who they are. To give you a clue as to what that might be they named their daughter Sagan after the late writer/astronomer Carl Sagan. She was born on the Dec.31st, and if ever there was.....with her a star was born. They take the tradition of their craft and add in their own flare; saddle bags are made as much made for rockets as they are motorcycles, their Wild West garments are as much inspired by Phaser fights with Kirk, and Spock at the O.K. Coral as they are Billy the Kid.
To top that, their work is impeccable(like their word and character) to see their Portraits, Wallets, and Ish Shoes you will be hard pressed to find one stitch that isn't perfect. Under the proper atmospheric conditions you could stare at one piece, the portrait of Sitting Bull and count the hundreds of pieces of leather that went into it and the thousands upon thousands of perfect stitches. Check out their stuff, and believe me when I say this is only the beginning. If you buy something from them, you might just have your life changed in the process.
Merry Christmas - Pop, Sagan, Claudia & Randy
